Horatio Spafford wrote the hymn, “It Is Well with My Soul,” after suffering a number of extreme personal trials including the death of all four of his daughters in a collision at sea. Despite this terrible tragedy and while visiting the site of this unbearable loss, he was still able to pen the lyrics to this hopeful and uplifting hymn. Mr. Spafford’s words describe a deep, abiding faith, whether in times of peace and security or in the midst of extreme trials.

When peace, like a river attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,
‘It is well, it is well, with my soul.’
