The Christian’s journey toward holiness can be seen as a cycle of revelation and response. For example, when the true extent of God’s love is revealed to us, we, in turn, desire to love more deeply. The fourth and final verse of the hymn, “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross,” written by the prolific and popular hymn writer Isaac Watts, illustrates our heart’s response to the love and atoning sacrifice of Christ: namely, a complete devotion to God and a total surrender to His will.

Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were a present far too small.
Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all!
